Recently, in one of my IELTS Topics Discussion lessons, students and I had an interesting discussion on animal cruelty and the killing of animals for leather. The idea of bio-fabrication came up. If you are not sure what this means, it is basically about creating leather or re-creating animal skin by ‘growing’ it, instead of having to slaughter animals for it.
This would be a great idea to bring up as a solution, should your examiner invite you to discuss something on animal cruelty or animal rights. It may even come up in an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay or an IELTS Listening or Reading text!
For a start, you can listen to a talk on this here:
- Andras Forgacs: Leather and Meat Without Killing Animals (TED Talk – you can listen with subtitles in your own language or download the transcript to read as you listen)
- Andras Forgacs: Leather and Meat Without Killing Animals (you can control the speaking speed here)
- Modern Meadow Makes Leather and Meat Without Killing Animals (you can practise reading a business text here)
- In Vitro Meat: The Future of Food?
Keeping yourself up-to-date with the latest news and information like this is a brilliant way of arming yourself with ideas when you have to argue your opinion during the interview or state your case in an essay.
