Discussing compassion in IELTS Writing and Speaking

Sunday Morning Live is a TV programme that discusses a lot of interesting issues of the week. If you’re in the UK, you can watch it every Sunday at 10am on BBC One. IELTS candidates would benefit a lot from the ideas and language thrown out during discussions. The video below is an example. The topic is based on a film called I, Daniel Blake and the issue here is:

Are we a less compassionate society?

This could be useful if you are asked to respond to a question similar to this in IELTS Speaking Part 3. It may even come up in IELTS Writing Task 2.

  • Well, it’s (the film has) confirmed my view that the state does treat people like numbers.
  • But equally …
  • It unfairly targets …
  • It’s very uni-dimensional.
  • It doesn’t address …
  • Having been somebody who …
  • The fact that there is … is a complete misnomer.
  • I think it’s certainly the case that ….
  • There is something about this which is ultimately de-humanising.
  • But I do think we need a bit of a broader perspective here.
  • for a good while now
  • myopically obsessed with
  • I would argue that it’s not true.
  • There is a huge crossover between the two.
  • That is fundamentally wrong.
  • I think it’s more a question of …
  • Research shows that our personality determines how we perceive …
  • If we have a system that doesn’t take take into account, then …
  • People need an arm on their shoulder, just a little bit of encouragement …
  • I mean that’s a very long-winded way of saying that we’re all homogenous lazy scroungers.
  • That’s offensive and puerile.
  • We need a bit more of a nudge.
  • It’s predicated on this idea that …
  • I just find it infuriating!
  • In fact, the whole system is trying to make it look like …
  • There is no recognition that it’s the policies …
  • I think we need to take a look at the moralism of this …
  • I think the issue of … is an interesting one.
  • I’m making a cultural judgement.
  • It seems to me that when you talk about society, it isn’t one thing. It’s a whole lot of different viewpoints, but the general divide is between people who ….
  • The state, by definition, is bureaucratic and treats people as numbers. That’s why it’s so tragic that the state has taken away …
  • The system that we have is unsustainable.

In your IELTS preparations, pay close attention to discussions or debates on TV or online. There is a wealth of information out there that you can take away with you for use in your IELTS discussions, not just for interviews but for essays as well. You just have to motivate yourself to do it.
